WSJ: Rio Tinto Inks Power Deal With European Energy for Giant Australia Solar Farm
January 23, 2024 Rio Tinto has entered into a power purchase agreement with European Energy to acquire electricity from the Upper Calliope solar farm in eastern Australia, supporting the development of the country’s largest solar farm. This move is part of Rio Tinto’s strategy to significantly reduce its Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 50% within this decade. The solar farm, which is expected to begin construction between 2025 and 2026, will supply power to Rio Tinto’s Gladstone operations, including an aluminum smelter and two alumina refineries. The initiative is projected to decrease Rio Tinto’s operational carbon emissions by 1.8 million metric tons annually, marking a substantial step towards the company’s sustainability goals.
