The Fix for Solar Power Blackouts Is Already Here
August 21, 2025 Source: Bloomberg Green Date Published: 08.21.2025 Link: The Fix for Solar Power Blackouts Is Already Here Countries racing to decarbonize their cities are rapidly expanding renewable energy, but grid stability is proving to be a critical bottleneck as shown by recent blackouts in Spain, Australia, and the UK. However, the intermittent nature of renewable energies present new challenges to grid stability when compared to legacy energy sources. The technologies to ensure renewable energy grid stabilization already exist in the form of synchronous compensators and grid-forming inverters, but underinvestment in grid-level upgrades has limited their installation as renewable energy generation has rapidly expanded. While the UK and Australia have led in their grid stabilization investments, most nations still invest far more in wind and solar generation than in the grids that must support them, slowing progress toward net-zero cities. Ultimately, widespread deployment of stabilizing technologies will determine whether urban centers can reliably run on clean energy without the politically destabilizing effects a blackout would have, making them a cornerstone of the future net-zero transition.
