S.F. Affordable Housing Program Aims for Balance
February 10, 2022 by The article highlights the Small Sites Program’s (SSP) ability to significantly impact preserving affordable housing and stabilizing communities facing eviction threats. The Small Sites Program, initiated in 2014, focuses on acquiring and rehabilitating buildings with 3 to 25 units where tenants are at risk of eviction. It aims to keep these units affordable under nonprofit ownership in perpetuity. To date, SSP has preserved 63 buildings housing 655 households across San Francisco. However, one problem is buildings acquired under SSP are exempt from San Francisco’s rent control ordinance but are subject to affordability restrictions tied to AMI. This has implications for tenants used to rent control protections, as SSP rents can sometimes increase more than those under traditional rent control.
