Rent caps may end in Prince George’s. Tenants are organizing a fight.
April 29, 2024 by Housing affordability is a pressing issue for legislators in Prince George’s, a majority-Black suburb bordering D.C. Additionally, homelessness is also on the rise, increasing by 47 percent last year — the highest in the Washington region. That’s why many community members are worried about the end of rent caps. The area’s rent stabilized units have annual 3 percent increases but it has not been made a law. There’s a vote coming up and organizers have gotten signatures to support the increase in the writing for fear that landlords can charge whatever rent they want. Conversely there is sentiment from others that landlords cannot provide a service and maintain their properties with a rent cap in place. https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/04/29/rent-cap-prince-georges
