Public Garden vs. Affordable Housing: A Court Rules for Housing
June 27, 2023 by Elizabeth Street Garden, located on Elizabeth Street between Prince and Spring Streets, is a popular public area where New Yorkers can do a myriad of activities such as yoga and poetry reading in a dense city like New York City. Given the housing crisis, the city has been pushing to develop affordable housing apartments on the site. It ended up successful as a New York appellate court approvedĀ a 123 apartment development for lower-income people over the age of 62, and their families. This overturned a lower-court ruling that halted the project after opponents sued. Units of the project will be for people earning less than $60,000, and also those that were once homeless. Opponents of the project see it as an open area for public use and have filed a challenge under environmental laws. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/27/nyregion/soho-garden-senior-housing.html?searchResultPosition=26
