NYT: Will You Have a White Christmas This Year? Probably not.
December 24, 2023 In the United States, the likelihood of experiencing a white Christmas is low for most areas, except for the Central Plains and mountainous regions. The National Weather Service defines a white Christmas as having at least one inch of snow on the ground or new snowfall on Christmas Day. A winter storm may bring snow to parts of South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Colorado, but only about 1 percent of the contiguous U.S. is expected to have a white Christmas. Central Park in New York City, known for its depiction of snowy holidays, hasn’t seen an inch of snow on Christmas in over a decade. The song “White Christmas” was written during a snowless period in the city, capturing nostalgia for snowy holidays. While Bing Crosby’s recording of the song during World War II contributed to its fame, New York City has had a white Christmas only about once every six years historically. This year, much of the United States is unlikely to experience a traditional snowy holiday. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/12/22/us/christmas-snow-weather-forecast.html
