NYT: Why the National Guard Can’t Ease All Fears About Riding the Subway
March 14, 2024 Governor Kathy Hochul’s deployment of 1,000 National Guard members and State Police to patrol New York City’s subway system aims to address public safety concerns, particularly following rare but highly publicized violent incidents. Despite statistical improvements in crime rates, Hochul emphasizes the importance of addressing the anxieties of everyday commuters. However, the effectiveness of increased security measures in alleviating fears related to mental illness-induced violence remains uncertain. While additional security cameras and random bag checks are part of the plan, their ability to prevent impulsive acts by individuals dealing with mental health issues is questionable. Jeffrey W. Swanson, a psychiatry and behavioral science professor at Duke, suggests that a militaristic presence might exacerbate feelings of paranoia among those experiencing psychotic episodes. Instead, he advocates for comprehensive solutions involving increased mental health and homeless services. The deployment of the National Guard reflects both an attempt to enhance safety perceptions and a political effort to counter narratives of Democratic weakness on crime. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/14/nyregion/new-york-subway-national-guard.html
