China is dealing with a challenging economic landscape, attempting to employ familiar crisis-response strategies with limited success. The real estate sector, constituting a significant portion of China’s economy, is at the core of the challenges, marked by stalled construction, defaults by real estate developers, and a decline in demand for new homes. The surge in apartment construction triggered by past lending measures led to oversupply, diminishing rental value and leaving investors with properties unable to cover mortgages.

With prices falling and demand plummeting, replicating the success of past initiatives seems unlikely. Analysts suggest that, beyond reductions in down payments, substantial interest rate cuts are necessary to revive the market, encourage borrowing for major purchases, and potentially stimulate exports. However, challenges persist, including an aging population, high levels of household savings, and a lack of significant enhancements to the social safety net, limiting consumer spending and economic resilience.
