As cities such as San Francisco and Chicago struggle to save and rebuild their once bustling downtowns, the city of St. Louis serves a dire warning. Cities further from either coast are suffering the most. As people became accustomed to working from home during the pandemic the phenomenon only exacerbated a declined trend in downtown visits. The AT&T tower which sold for $205 million in 2006 changed hands in 2022 for a measly $4 million. A domino effect has ensued; anchor tenants vacating started the trend followed by AT&T exiting their building followed by local shop and retailers.
