NYT: New York City Sues Queens Library Architects Over Lack of Accessibility
June 07, 2023 The New York City government is suing the architects of the Queens Public Library at Hunters Point for $10 million, alleging that the building violates the Americans With Disabilities Act and other laws. The lawsuit claims that the library lacks accessibility features such as adequate space for wheelchairs, improper slope of the rooftop ramp, and small doorways. Despite its architectural acclaim, the library faces criticism for its lack of accessibility, including a staircase as the only access to certain areas and inadequate elevator access. The lawsuit follows investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the New York City Commission on Human Rights, as well as previous lawsuits filed against the library. While adjustments have been made, such as relocating bookshelves for easier access, significant accessibility issues remain. The architects defend their design, calling the lawsuit “meritless” and emphasizing their commitment to accessibility. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/07/nyregion/queens-library-lawsuit-ada.html
