NYT: New Report Reveals N.Y.C. Areas Most Hurt by Environmental Inequities
April 05, 2024 A recent report from the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice in New York City reveals the disproportionate environmental burdens faced by low-income communities of color. Nearly half of the city’s population resides in areas identified as “environmental justice areas,” characterized by pollution, lack of green space, and socioeconomic challenges. Structural racism and poverty exacerbate issues related to housing, health, and climate change. The report underscores the need for targeted investment in disadvantaged neighborhoods, especially as the city aims to meet ambitious climate goals. Key findings include high rates of food insecurity, diet-related diseases, and difficulty paying energy bills, particularly in the Bronx. The report also highlights disparities in access to public parks and healthcare services. Moving forward, the city plans to engage with the public to develop strategies for addressing these inequities. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/05/nyregion/climate-change-pollution-nyc-report.html
