Wildfires occurring in various parts of Canada sent a thick hazardous smoke towards New York City that created unhealthy conditions. Most New Yorkers were finding ways to stay inside and avoid the toxic particles that permeated through the city. However scientists were keen to observe the noticeable temperature drop in the city. This was caused by particles in the atmosphere that reflected some of the sun’s radiation back into space.  A proliferating number of climate researchers believe humans should deliberately replicate these conditions. By intentionally injecting a thin layer of sulfates into the upper atmosphere, the temperature of earth will be reduced and climate change mitigated. The risks with this proposal are exceptional. Preliminary research suggests it could partially deplete the ozone layer, create unpredictable  monsoons, damage lungs and contribute to geopolitical conflicts. However, scientists think it could delay the more deleterious effects record high temperatures have brought. Regardless, the idea would be a hard sell to the general public as so many things could go wrong. While an interesting idea, it will be awhile for there is any substantive movement towards sulfuric layer covering our cities.
