New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) needs more than $78 billion to repair or renovate more than 2,100 buildings home to more than 330,000 people. This cost has increased more than 70% since it was last calculated in 2017, due to inflation and rising construction costs. $60 billion of the investment is primarily for replacement of boilers and heating systems over the next five years. Other repairs needed include leaking pipes, unfunctional elevators, renovation of kitchens, wear and tear. NYCHA is currently under new leadership, having come into public scrutiny previously for their lack of progress in dealing with its most serious problems including lead, mold, and heating failures.
