NYT: A Giant Wind Farm Is Taking Root Off Massachusetts
June 27, 2023 The Vineyard Wind project, located off the coast of Massachusetts, marks the beginning of construction for the first large-scale offshore wind farm in the United States. Spearheaded by Vineyard Offshore, the $4 billion project aims to contribute significantly to the Northeast power grid. Despite facing challenges in regulatory approval and opposition, including from the fishing industry concerned about the turbines’ impact, the project is expected to generate electricity by the end of the year. With 62 turbines towering up to 850 feet high, the wind farm will be barely visible from Martha’s Vineyard. While offshore wind is a novel proposition in the U.S., the success of Vineyard Wind is seen as a crucial step in paving the way for similar projects along the East Coast. The project is expected to bring economic benefits to local communities, including job creation and infrastructure development. However, opposition from fishing groups and concerns about environmental impacts persist, highlighting ongoing debates surrounding offshore wind development in the U.S.
