‘Magic’ Multigenerational Housing Aims to Alleviate Social Isolation
January 10, 2022 by The U.S. faces challenges such as an aging population, caregiver shortages, affordable housing deficits, and rising social isolation. A proposed solution is Magic (multi-ability, multigenerational, inclusive co-living) communities, where people of all ages and abilities live together, supported by inclusive design, technology, and neighborly interaction. Geriatrician William Thomas co-founded Kallimos Communities to develop such neighborhoods, with the first ones set in Colorado, aiming to counteract the negative effects of segregating older adults and individuals with special needs. These communities, staffed to foster community ties and assist with daily needs, are designed to be universally accessible. Similar projects like the Village of Hope in Pennsylvania also address affordable housing shortages and complex caregiving needs by creating inclusive living environments. These initiatives encourage reciprocal relationships among residents and attract both older adults and younger individuals looking for affordable, supportive living arrangements.
