Link: LA is Finally Tackling its Concrete Problem

Los Angeles County has approved the Urban Natureways initiative, led by Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath, to transform underused infrastructure—such as flood channels and utility corridors—into greenways that promote recreation, climate resilience, habitat restoration, and social equity. The first phase targets corridors including Compton Creek, the Emerald Necklace, the Lower L.A. River, and the Pacoima Wash. The County’s Department of Parks and Recreation will collaborate with local agencies and community organizations to plan, maintain, and activate these spaces, supported by a new Urban Natureway Marketplace for small businesses and workforce development. Inspired by models like the Atlanta BeltLine, this initiative reimagines Los Angeles’s concrete landscapes as vibrant, connected ecological and community assets.
