Washington, D.C. just welcomed its first office-to-housing conversion project. What was once the form office building of the U.S Peace Corp. is now a 163 unit apartment building. This is part of Mayor Muriel Bowser’s goal to convert vacant office buildings to attract residents to the central city; 22% of the city’s office space is vacant, lowering city revenue. According to the Office of the Chief Financial Officer, more than 28 million square feet of office space was vacant as of March. The city set aside $8 million in its latest financial plan to persuade developers to convert other office buildings into retail or entertainment venues and has 11 conversions in the pipeline.
