Housing in Brief: New Yorkers Support Good Cause Eviction
May 26, 2022 by In a recent poll conducted by Data for Progress, a majority of New Yorkers expressed support for a “Good Cause” eviction bill aimed at restricting evictions except in cases of nonpayment, lease violations, or court orders. The poll, which surveyed 1001 individuals in early May, revealed strong backing across party lines with 79% of Democrats and 50% of Republicans either strongly supporting or somewhat supporting the legislation. Support was consistent across regions with high renter populations such as New York City, Long Island, and the Mid-Hudson Valley. Despite this public support, the bill faces significant opposition from real estate lobbyists and some legislators, including Governor Kathy Hochul, who has not yet endorsed the measure. The legislation also proposes to cap rent increases in non-stabilized units at either 3% or tied to inflation, further intensifying debate and advocacy efforts as the legislative session nears its end. https://nextcity.org/urbanist-news/housing-briefs-new-yorkers-support-good-cause-eviction
