Link: Global Methane Hub Announces $10 Million Investment to Accelerate Methane Reduction in Latin American and Caribbean Cities

At the 2025 C40 World Mayors Summit, the Global Methane Hub announced a $10 million investment to help cities in Latin America and the Caribbean reduce methane emissions from waste. The funding will support municipalities in developing city-level methane reduction strategies, leveraging data, finance, and policy innovation to deliver measurable climate progress. Building on the success of C40’s Sustainable Waste Systems Accelerator, the initiative will provide technical support and satellite-based monitoring tools like Carbon Mapper and WasteMAP. Cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Accra have already committed to cutting methane from organic waste by at least 30% by 2030. Across Africa, Latin America, and Asia, 22 C40 cities are projected to reduce 1.2 million tons of methane between 2024 and 2030, equal to removing 22 million cars from the road. Leaders at the summit emphasized that tackling methane from waste delivers immediate climate, health, and economic benefits, creating green jobs and advancing circular economy goals.
