D.C. commission approves zoning change for U Street despite opposition
July 12, 2024 by Despite pushback from Northern Washington residents, D.C officially approved a zoning change that allows hundreds of housing units to be built on city-owned property. 500 apartments are expected with 30% subsidized. More specifically, the voting measure now increases the height a building can rise on a portion of the U street in northern washington from 40 to 100 feet. Councilmembers praised the commission while residents in public hearings said the new zoning would motivate nearby building owners to “cash out,” driving up prices in the area and making it unaffordable for many Washingtonians. https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/07/12/dc-u-street-zoning-vote
