Project Renewal, a nonprofit based in Lower Manhattan, is proceeding with plans to develop a homeless shelter near the Gertrude Ederle playground in Lincoln Square, despite opposition from local activist groups. The organization filed a permit application with the city Department of Buildings for a shelter on W. 59th St., announcing the commencement of demolition at the existing site. The new facility will include 200 beds for single women, a medical facility, and a commercial kitchen. Dattner Architects is overseeing the project. Despite neighborhood resistance, Project Renewal asserts it values community relationships and has engaged with local stakeholders regarding the shelter.
