Crain’s: Mayor’s business-boosting zoning plan advances to final stage, with some tweaks
March 06, 2024 The City of Yes for Economic Opportunity plan, led by Mayor Eric Adams, aims to significantly reform New York City’s zoning laws to foster economic development by easing restrictions on business operations across a variety of sectors. This ambitious initiative seeks to update the city’s zoning code, which has been largely unchanged since 1961, to allow for greater flexibility in where businesses, including clean manufacturers and life-science labs, can be located. Key changes proposed include eliminating outdated regulations that limit business growth, such as those preventing dancing in some commercial zones or mandating certain types of businesses to operate only on upper floors. Despite receiving support from various business groups, the plan has encountered opposition from many of the city’s community boards, which express concerns over the mixing of residential and commercial uses. The City Planning Commission has approved the plan, which is now pending a final decision from the City Council.
