Link: Cities in Amazonia: Unlocking Prosperity and Protecting Ecosystems

In observance of World Cities Day, this article highlights the significant role cities play in the Amazon region. Despite progress, these cities remain among the poorest in their countries, as they are deeply intertwined with surrounding natural landscapes and often isolated from transportation networks. Inadequate connectivity, infrastructure, and public services depress productivity, creating a “connectivity trap,” a self-reinforcing cycle that keeps Amazonian cities in low-value subsistence economies with limited opportunities and low wages. To address the unique challenges of Amazonian urban systems, the Amazon Cities Forum is developing a common strategic agenda to promote sustainable development. Key priorities include upgrading road infrastructure, adopting environmentally sensitive transport, promoting denser development to reduce ecological footprints, and boosting productivity. The agenda also emphasizes pilot initiatives to address climate challenges, including urban tree management, strengthening local capacities through climate resilience projects and resource mobilization, and fostering sustainable city practices. Additionally, the Ministries of Housing and Urban Development from eight Amazonian countries are launching the MINURVI Amazonia Working Group. The Inter-American Development Bank’s publication, “Cities in Amazonia,” will be launched at COP30, reinforcing the commitment to inclusive and sustainable development across the region.
