The two-week UN summit in the Amazonian city of Belem has brought nearly 200 countries together to scale up multilateral action on climate change. While the U.S. is not in attendance, despite being a top historical greenhouse gas emitter, countries are moving forward, and supportive nations are working to craft an agreement to transition away from fossil fuels. The roadmap to guide the transition has been met with significant pushback, and Saudi Arabia has been named as a main opposer to the fossil fuel plan. At the summit, the issue of climate finance and how rich countries will provide financial support to poorer countries for clean energy is also on the table. The carbon offset market has also slowed in its progress to get up and running.
