The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut, which has been for decades a crucial site for play development in America, is now at risk of having to close down due to budget cuts. Many other important theater incubators have been forced to close in recent years, and dozens more are in the same precarious spot as the Eugene O’Neill. The most notable of the O’Neill’s programs is one which focuses on development for aspiring playwrights. The center’s annual operating budget has shrunk by almost $2 million in the last years due to budget cuts. The Trump administration’s recent actions affecting funding of the arts has also led a National Endowment to be rescinded and a partnership with a foreign theater center to be canceled. Private donation has also decreased heavily.
