Con Edison has achieved a critical milestone in its transition to clean energy by completing a six-mile transmission line from Corona to Long Island City, allowing the closure of a fossil fuel power plant in Astoria. This initiative, part of the Reliable Clean City project, aligns with New York’s ambitious climate goals, aiming to establish a 100% clean energy electric grid by 2040 and a fossil fuel-free economy by 2050. Additionally, Con Edison is preparing to build the Brooklyn Clean Energy Hub, an offshore wind interconnection point, to accommodate 1,500 megawatts of new wind projects, contributing significantly to the state’s renewable energy portfolio. These efforts mark a substantial shift towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, essential for combating climate change.
