Advancing Materials Procurement Processes in Construction: A Framework for Optimizing Technology Integration in SMEs’ Construction Supply Chains
September 05, 2025 Source: International Journal of Construction Management (Taylor & Francis Online) Date Published: 09.05.2025 Created in December 2024, accepted in August 2025, and published in September 2025, this research presents a framework aimed at enhancing materials procurement for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the construction industry. The study pinpoints significant inefficiencies stemming from manual operations and disjointed supply chains, and it suggests a five-step digital model—input, purchasing, tracking, data management, and feedback—that incorporates technologies like mobile apps, cloud databases, GPS, and RFID (radio-frequency identification). Testing with participating SMEs showed notable improvements: 34% quicker order processing, 25% reduction in material waste, and 35% increase in inventory accuracy. The framework illustrates how digital tools can promote transparency, efficiency, and sustainability within construction supply chains. By minimizing waste and streamlining resource flow, this model supports the goals of Net Zero Cities, proving that integrating technology is crucial for achieving low-carbon and circular construction methods.
