The BMT vision calls for a 60-acre, modern, all-electric port integrated with mixed-use development (housing, open space, and industrial space). By designing the terminal to enable water-to-water cargo transfers, the project is explicitly aligned with Blue Highways’ goal of shifting freight off trucks and onto the harbor—reducing congestion and emissions while strengthening supply-chain resilience and port jobs. “Harbor of the Future” ties together multiple waterfront innovation hubs (Governors Island, Brooklyn Navy Yard, Hunts Point) to catalyze climate solutions, good jobs, and public access. Within that framework, BMT functions as the maritime freight anchor in Brooklyn, complementing adjacent harbor investments and climate-innovation efforts across the network. Blue Highways, jointly advanced by NYCEDC and NYC DOT, is the operational playbook that makes this shift real—adding barge routes, landings, and last-mile solutions. EDC’s recent “Working Waterfront” blueprint projects that Blue Highways could expand the maritime workforce significantly by 2035; positioning BMT to capture perishables and other cargo streams is part of that jobs story. In short: BMT is where the Harbor-of-the-Future vision meets Blue-Highways execution—modernizing the port, cleaning the air, and building an innovation-oriented waterfront for Brooklyn and the New York Harbor.
